Summer & Fashion in London Camden
A few days ago, maybe it was just a palpitation of the leaves, but I could have sworn I heard the summer quietly whispering that it finally got to UK, and it seemed like absolutely "every man and their dog" were outside playing.
I was not an exception to this overall heat euphoria and went with my friends to Camden and its surroundings. Camden is known for its avant garde fashion designers, cutting edge musicians, talented artists and craftsmen, exciting clubs and music venues but, above all, it is known for its markets.
The place is quite famous, but I was not sure whether it was my cup of tea... Well, visiting Camden now, after I spent over 3 years in UK, completely turned up side down my whole perception of this kind of places.
Follow up:
I guess, to understand London’s beauty and vibe in full, one needs to live here for quite a long time. Only then you can really comprehend its fashion and feel the atmosphere within you. And that is not only my point of view. For example, I recently read an article in New Style magazine with the interview with Alexandre Vassiliev, famous fashion historian, theatre and set designer, scenic artist and collector. He is teaching fashion all over the world and this is what he says: "We have a study programme in Paris, Rome and Istanbul, and lectures all year round in Morocco, Hong Kong and Venice..... I love London, but I avoided it for a long time because of the amount of time needed here to appreciate the special features of British style and just how beautiful and great it is."
But let us come back to Camden. Stables Market is the largest and most colourful of the markets. A converted Victorian horse hospital provides a seemingly endless maze of cobbled alleyways, converted warehouses and covered outdoor eating areas. Everything from cyberpunk to vintage clothing, esoteric record stores and unusual furniture. You will find a couple of jewellery shops run by skilled designers (gold, silver, precious, semi-precious, including some quite unusual stones), the rest are stalls that sell imported jewellery items, usually from the Far East.
After going for a stroll along Camden high street we ended up in a bar on a roof of one of an old building, where we relaxed with some shisha and cocktails... Then we came back to the heart of Camden - Camden Proud (famous bar, gallery and live music venue) and enjoyed live jazz band "Favourite Things" quintet…Great atmosphere!
We finished our evening in exotic pan-Asian Gilgamesh restaurant… My favourites there are: duck and watermelon salad and scallop sashimi... mmmm... ![]()
